Exchanging a foreign or overseas licence for a French licence

This should be done if:

  • You want to exchange your driving licence issued in an Overseas Collectivity, or 
  • You want to exchange your foreign driving licence, or 
  • You want to exchange your driving licence issued in a European Union or EEA country, or 
  • You hold a licence issued by a European Union or EEA country and would like it to be registered in France for professional reasons.

Préparer les documents à fournir

  • Proof of identity (national identity card, passport)
  • Proof of legal residence (valid residence permit)
  • Proof of address less than six months old
  • The current driving licence
  • A certificate of entitlement to drive less than 6 months old issued by the foreign authorities that issued the driving licence

If your driving licence has been cancelled or suspended: 

  • the cancellation or suspension decision
  • the letter from the prefecture informing you of the requirement to exchange
  • the medical opinion

 

For a licence including heavy-vehicle categories:

  • a medical opinion stating that you are fit to drive such a vehicle
  • or a statement waiving the right to drive such vehicles

 

If the driving licence was lost, the declaration of loss

 

In the driving licence was stolen, the theft report (made at the gendarmerie or police station)

 

Additional documents depending on the applicant and the licence held:

• proof of normal residence in the foreign country at the time the foreign licence was issued (if the applicant is not a national of the country issuing the licence)

Examples: Certificate of registration and deletion from consular registers, employment contract, payslips, employment certificate, etc.

 

• a translation (by an approved translator) of the certificate of entitlement to drive if it is not written in French

 

• a translation (by an approved translator) of the driving licence if it is not written in French

 

•If you have acquired French citizenship, the naturalisation decree (declaration of citizenship)

    Log in or create an account

    Once you have logged in to your space, click on:

    • New application
    • driving licences
    • Start the Application

  2. 2
    Start the process
    • choose the reason for your request "I am applying to register or exchange my foreign driving licence",
    • fill out the details requested (person over 18, under 18, under 18 registering early / return to driving licence)
    • fill out the personal details and postal address & contact sections

  3. 3
    Collect the photo-signature

    There are two ways to provide your photo and signature:

    • Use an e-photo code (digitised photo + signature) obtained from an ANTS-authorised photographer
    • Mail your passport-size photo and the submission form provided at the end of the process

    Add the supporting documents

    Read the summary of the procedure
    • If an error is found in the summary, you can use the "Previous step" button.
    • If the wrong reason is selected, the only option is to delete the application and enter a new one

    Confirm the procedure

    If you are not using an e-photo code, click on "Photo signature submission form"

    This form should be returned with your passport-size photo by post

  7. 7
    Track its progress in your ANTS space

    Once you have logged in to your account, you can view your application in the dashboard

    8. Start your online transaction
