Your driving test result will be available 48 hours after the test (excluding weekends and public holidays).
To find out the result of your driving test, go to: Driving licence results
If you've passed, you have two options for obtaining your driving licence:
- Your driving school makes the request for you and you don't have to do anything;
- You ask on your own for your driving licence to be printed.
France has opted to make licences valid for as long as possible for users: The new licence is valid for 15 years (5 years if it includes heavy-vehicle categories: C, D, etc.).
“New format" driving licences issued since September 2013 now include an expiry date. Depending on the case, your licence will be valid for between 1 and 15 years (the expiry date can be found on the front of the licence, under item 4b). At the end of this period (which can be from 1 to 15 years), you will have to apply for a new document to be printed (this is free of charge) due to “Licence expiry".
The online driving licence application also includes the option of submitting a medical opinion, which is often required for renewals when the licence expires.
Do not confuse the licence expiry date with the dates when your categories expire. This information is available for each category on the back of your licence. So even if your licence is only valid for 5 or 15 years, your category B car licence remains valid for life (unless you have individual restrictions).
In this case, you will need to undergo a new medical exam before your initial exam expires.
Depending on the case, this exam may have to be made by a medical committee or an approved doctor.
If you have had your driving licence for less than 3 years, you must retake both the written portion (quiz) and the hands-on portion (driving test).
You can take the tests while you are prohibited from driving.
If you had more than one category of driving licence, you must retake the driving tests for each category.
The date used to calculate the 3-year period is the date on which the first category was earned.
If you have had your driving licence for 3 years or more, you must retake the written test provided you meet the following 2 conditions:
- Your licence has been invalid for less than 1 year. In general, the period of invalidation is 6 months.
- You register for the driving test no later than 9 months from the date when you handed in your licence at the prefecture.
You should wait until you receive the administrative decision by post.
In accordance with the French Code of Relations between Government and the Public, you may submit any of these:
- a review appeal to the examining body (CERT) in charge of your application
- a governmental appeal to the Minister of the Interior:
Ministère de l'intérieur
Délégation à la sécurité routière
Place Beauvau
75800 PARIS Cedex 08
- a judicial appeal to the administrative court in your place of residence.
If your governmental or review appeal is denied, you have two months following the decision to refer the matter to the administrative court.
However, it should be noted that these appeals do not stay the initial decision.
Note: A decision is deemed to be implicit if the authority fails to respond within two months.
It is said to be explicit if a letter is sent to you confirming the denial.
All drivers can obtain their short information statement (RIR) "relevé d'information restreint" by consulting the Télépoints service on the Ministry of the Interior website at tele7.interieur.gouv.fr

Only your birth name appears on a driving licence in the new format.
A new driving licence can be issued in the following cases:
- Divorce: when your customary name (married name) appeared on your licence and you wish to obtain a new licence with another name (which must be your birth name).
- Adoption or change of name following a court ruling (you will be asked to provide a photocopy of the ruling).
Marriage no longer requires a new driving licence.
Driving licences issued since 16 September 2013 do not show the holder's address.
Consequently, a change of address does not cause a new driving licence to be issued.
However, you can report your change of address by post to your prefecture, by sending:
- a copy of your driving licence
- your valid identity document (both sides for a national identity card or driving licence; only the page showing marital status for a passport)
- Proof of address less than six months old
The national records containing all driving licences (FNPC) will be updated with your new address.
Previously, a category B licence automatically led to an A1 licence.
Users who have this category, obtained by equivalence, and who apply for an International Driving Permit will have the A1 indicated on the document.
However, the option of obtaining category A1 by equivalence was abolished on 19 January 2013.
Earning an A1 licence by training
The A1 training licence follows a 7-hour training course. Category B is compulsory for this licence, and no special document is issued in this case.
Users must carry their driving licence and the certificate issued by the driving school.
The A1 category earned by training allows you to drive within France only.
Earning an A1 licence by exam
The A1 driving licence is obtained via a written portion (quiz) and a driving portion consisting of 2 phases (out of traffic and in traffic).
Candidates must be 16 years of age to take the exams.
The ASSR2 or ASR is compulsory for under-21s and first-time drivers.
This category is not subject to renewal.
An application for a lost or stolen licence costs €25.
Payment is made online when the application is filed, using a digital tax stamp.
Tax stamps can also be purchased from a tobacconist.
The driving licence must be returned to the Prefecture.
Please consult your Prefecture's website for details of the delivery arrangements, which may vary depending on where you live.
You can also send your driving licence by post (by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt, known as LRAR - lettre recommandée avec accusé de réception).
The regulations allow candidates to register at the testing centre of their choice, regardless of where they reside.
You can register wherever you like.
To learn whether you need to undergo a medical examination by an approved doctor or a medical board following the invalidation/cancellation/suspension of your driving licence,
you will need to contact the prefecture where you live by e-mail. Only the prefecture is authorised to give you this information.
To obtain a full information statement (RII), you need to submit your request by e-mail to your local prefecture.
If a licence is returned to the prefecture, a letter is sent to the user and the computer file is updated.
If the envelope has been lost, the issuing department can check its information about the document's delivery in the application.
If your application has been put on hold, please enclose a letter explaining your situation.
